We were so excited to catch up with Julia Anastasopoulos, the women behind the brand Suzelle DIY. When we realised we needed an inspirational, entrepreneurial woman- there was not better choice.
How did your character Suzelle DIY come to life?
Suzelle DIY started in 2014, when my boyfriend Ari (now husband) and I decided to combine our creative skills and make
a film. We realised that it was going to take too long to make the movie, so we decided to do something immediate using the resources that we had available. We turned to YouTube and started making DIY episodes, we wanted to parody the weird and unusual people you find online. The episodes quickly gained traction and our audience began to grow and the rest is history!
DIY is typically considered a “man- are- na”, are you hoping to change that?
Yes I am! Suzelle’s philosophy is ANYBODY CAN!
What do you love most about being Suzelle?
The creativity, making things and bringing laughter to people.
Tell us your greatest “Suzelle” DIY success & disaster.
The greatest success has been being able to earn a living from Suzelle. The greatest disaster was setting the umbrella on fire (which inadvertently was a success as that episode went viral).
Who’s been the most exciting person you’ve collaborated with?
Making a video with Tannie Evita was a big moment for me, she is such a South African icon and she was so supportive and encouraging.
Which video is your personal favourite?
How to get Fluff off a Jersey because it was the first episode that featured my best friend Marianne.
How can women empower other women?
I think it’s important for women to share their stories and experiences in any shape or form. For me it has been about exploring truth through comedy which I hope can make a difference.
What is your top tip for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Make sure that whatever you’re doing is something that you are extremely passion- ate about. When the times get tough it’s your passion that will carry you through.
Do you feel prepared for Parenthood?
Absolutely! I’ve always wanted to be a mom and it’s been a total whirlwind and crazy time so far! We love our baby Zoe. If you weren’t doing this, you’d be… …illustrating children’s books.
