As a Holistic Health Coach, I believe wholeheartedly in the body’s ability to protect and heal itself given the correct support in the form of nutrition and lifestyle. We can all take a proactive approach to maintain good health instead of waiting to get sick.
Our human body has a natural defence system in place called our immune system, of which 70-80% is housed in our gut. This immune system kicks into gear when it identifies a virus by producing antibodies. Our first line of defence to support our immune system is what we consistently eat, drink, put into our bodies and the lifestyle we lead.
Your immune system is depleted when you:
- Eat processed/junk food (sugar, flour, vegetable oil and artificial colourants and flavours)
- Don’t sleep well
- Smoke or over indulge in alcohol
- Use toxic cleaning and beauty products
- Are constantly stressed
Your immune system loves it when you:Eat a mostly plant based diet full of fresh and organic fruit and vegetables. Try to incorporate three cups of greens into your daily diet (think smoothies and soups) and eat the rainbow. Encourage yourself and your family to try a new vegetable every week. Have fun in the kitchen by planning meals and prepping food together!
Drink lots of water – the 8 glasses of water a day still holds true. Try to drink only filtered water as much as possible and avoid water that is packaged in plastic.
Sweat and move your body daily, As it’s difficult at the moment to meet a friend for yoga, coffee or a delicious meal out somewhere, try joining an online yoga class via Zoom, WhatsApp video call a friend or schedule ‘catch up drinks’ with friends or the like’.
Use natural solutions for home and beauty products. Our immune system is overloaded with all the chemicals we come into contact with on a daily basis. Replacing toxic chemicals in your home with natural cleaners made with essential oils is a great step to eliminate some of these toxins.
Sleep well and make sleep a priority. Here are a few tips to support your sleep:
- Limit tech one hour before bedtime
- Try to go to bed the same time every night
- Take an Epsom salts bath with essential oils 2-3 times per week
- Sleep in a cool, dark room (or use an eye mask)
- Journal before bed; brain dumping your thoughts onto paper helps to quiet the mind
Practise gratitude. By focusing on what we have and being thankful for it, supports our mental health and keeps us in a positive state of mind. Your immune system loves it when you think happy thoughts!
Washing your hands frequently and keeping all surfaces in your home clean is very important, however no hand sanitiser will work if you are depleting your natural defence system with processed and inflammatory foods, sugary drinks, stress and fear.
