We spoke to Amy Knoetze from Pulse Dermatology and laser.
As we all know, our skin is our biggest organ. It is also our most sensitive. Our skin is affected by everything – our lifestyle, what we eat and drink, medication, sun exposure, our general health…the list goes on. Many of these factors can lead to premature ageing. Ageing is caused by inflammation, pigmentation, and acne. Atopic skin conditions like eczema, rosacea, as well as increased skin sensitivity, are all caused by inflammation of some kind. Inflammation can even cause hair loss! Now, with the Covid 19 vaccine, we are introducing inflammation into the body – this will definitely affect our skins, too!
Having had COVID (or even simply getting the vaccine) can make the skin super-sensitive. It can dry out the skin, or cause severe dehydration and hyperpigmentation. Based on what we know about inflammation, it is necessary that we know how to treat skin in these times.
Now is the time to address Inflammaging! If you have received your vaccine, or are planning on getting your jab, please make sure to support your skin! This can be done in a number of ways, even in the comfort of your own home!
What is Inflammaging?
What should we use to support our skin against inflammation of any kind? We need to use medical-grade skincare products and ingredients that are well-tolerated by the skin – specifically growth factors and antioxidants to fight against the inflammation. Hydration, barrier repair, and sun protection are a must!
This doesn’t mean that you need to change your whole skin care routine or product range. All you need is to slot in a product like the AQ Active Serum once a day under your daily moisturiser!
How long before receiving your vaccine should you introduce these ingredients into your skin care routine, if you are not already using them? Some medical specialists say 4 – 6 weeks and other says 14 days. We would err on the side of caution, and suggest beginning to prepare your skin at least 4 weeks prior to getting your vaccine – this is how long a regular, healthy cell turnover will take in your epidermis.
What about recommendations for aesthetic treatments and medical aesthetic procedures? For superficial, mild and non invasive treatments, we recommend pausing your procedures 14 days before and 2-3 weeks after getting the vaccine. For more advanced skin treatments such as micro needling, certain chemical peels, laser, and medical aesthetic procedures such as botox, fillers and threads, suspend treatment 4 – 6 weeks before and after getting your vaccine!
What types of treatments are completely safe to have done?
Focus on anti-inflammatory treatments like Growth Factor Induced Therapy (GFIT) treatments, where we use the AQ Recovery Serum with different modalities. We also recommend certain chemical peels that have anti-inflammatory properties. This includes ingredients that have calming, healing and antioxidant-type benefits, as well as hydration and barrier protection.
How long after receiving the vaccine should I keep using these ingredients? It is very important to understand that our skins are all vastly different, and we will all react or respond in different ways to both the vaccine and to different skincare products. I would therefore suggest to keep using these kinds of beneficial ingredients on your skin for an extended period of time!
What do growth factors do in the skin?
AQ growth factors allow your skin to heal itself. It will work differently on each person’s skin because it will assess what needs to be done – for example, some patients have more inflammation than others, or maybe the vascular system within the skin isn’t functioning properly, or a patient’s collagen production has been affected. Growth factors will regulate cell functions, meaning it will work on any and all skin conditions, bringing your skin back to its healthiest state.
What makes AQ skin solutions growth factors different to other growth factors on the market? Growth factors are natural substances (proteins) made by skin cells to maintain healthy skin. Therefore, if we need to replenish our Growth Factors, we should do so from a human source! They are key messaging molecules that control how our cells function and behave.Inflamed skin requires growth factors to heal and rejuvenate itself. AQ Growth Factors replicate your own growth factors. AQ Growth Factors are cloned in the lab, meaning no genetic material from the donor line is traceable in the products.
Plant derived growth factors are not capable of regulating human cells as growth factors are species-specific.
